Dear Delegate

On behalf of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Third Annual International Conference of Thai Society of Behavioral Medicine and First Asian Regional Conference on Behavioral Medicine, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. Currently, the International Society of Behavioral Medicine has member societies from almost 20 countries around the world and it is wonderful to see the burgeoning interest in the field of behavioral medicine in other countries as well. Thailand who is a member of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine has a long history in behavioral, social and public health research into many of those major public health challenges, for example, tobacco and HIV/AIDS, which confront this region of the world, so the field of behavioral medicine will be very helpful in this regard.

The definition of behavioral medicine is: The scope of 'behavioral medicine' extends from research efforts to understand fundamental biobehavioral mechanisms; to clinical diagnosis and intervention; to disease prevention and health promotion…concerned with the integration of the psychosocial, behavioral and biomedical sciences.

The program for this meeting that has been organized by Dr. Kotchabhakdi and colleagues reflects very nicely this definition of behavioral medicine, in particular, the interdisciplinarity of the psychosocial, behavioral and biomedical sciences.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this wonderful event and I hope you find it exciting and rewarding. We look forward to meeting many of you at the 8th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine being held in Mainz, Germany, August 25-28, 2004.

Professor Dr. Gunilla Burell
President of ISBM
