TSBM Conference and Workshop Activities 2001-2003


The first International Conference on "Behavioral Medicine in the New Millennium: The Mind - the Brain and Behaviour in Common Public Health Problems" was organized by Thai Forum of Behavioral Medicine in collaboration with The International Society of Behavioural Medicine, the National Institute for Child and Family Development, and Neuro-Behavioural Biology Center, Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development, Mahidol University, Salaya, Nakornpathom, Thailand between April 30 - May 2, 2000 at the Siam City Hotel, Bangkok. The conference was initiated by ideas from Professor Holger Ursin, President of Norwegian Society of Behavioral Medicine and Chairperson of the ISBM International Collaboration Committee and supported by Professor Neil Schneiderman, Past President of ISBM and Professor Brian Oldenburg, President of ISBM. Approximately 200 people from Thailand, China, Sri Lanka, Norway, New Zealand, and USA attended the three day Conference. The international faculty included Hege R. Eriksen, PhD and Holger Ursin, MD from Norway, Rona Moss-Morris, PhD and Keith J. Petrie, PhD from New Zealand and Neil Schneiderman, PhD and Redford B. Williams, Jr., MD and Virginia Williams Ph.D. from the United States. Each gave 4-5 plenary talks and 1-2 workshops over periods of three days conference and two days post-conference workshop. Topics included: international behavioral medicine and public health; subjective health complaints; coronary heart disease and rehabilitation; chronic fatigue syndrome; HIV/AIDS; and psychosocial risk factors and bio-behavioral mechanisms in chronic disease. During the Conference, attempted were made to cover full spectrum of behavioural medicine from prevention, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation issues. Two former Ministers of Public Health for Thailand inaugurated and addressed the Conference. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and two former Deans of the Faculty of Public Health and a former director of Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University gave plenary lectures and chaired conference sessions. Also presenting plenary lectures were the country program manager of the WHO joint collaboration with Thailand, the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, and the CEO of Theptarin Hospital in Bangkok. Their topics included: current issues in health behavior and health promotion in Thailand; sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and behavioral medicine in Thailand; behavioral aspects of health in children and adolescents; drug and substance abuse issues in Thailand; behavior modification for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes; sleep and its impact on health and disease; and strategies to stop cigarette smoking in Thailand. In addition, there were satellite luncheon symposia on: sleep, insomnia and management of insomnia; and senile dementia and Alzheimer s disease. The Post-Conference Intensive Training Workshop "Perspectives and Research Methodology for Behavioural Medicine" was organized at the Main Auditorium 3rd Floor National Institute for Child and Family Development, Mahidol University, Salaya, Nakornpathom Thailand between May 3 - 4, 2001. Approximately 100 participants attended the workshop, which provided good opportunities for young investigators and researchers to meet with experts in various areas of behavioural medicine. The Second International Conference "Behavioral Medicine: Stress: Impacts on Health, Illness, Disease and Quality of Life" organized by Thai Society of Behavioral Medicine (TSBM) in collaboration with The College of Family Physicians of Thailand, The National Institute for Child and Family Development, and Neuro-Behavioural Biology Center, Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development, Mahidol University, Salaya, Nakornpathom, Thailand between July 22nd - 23rd, 2002, at the Siam City Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. Approximately 100 people attended the two days conference and Annual Business and Member Meeting, and the evening reception of TSBM. Two former Ministers of Health, Professor Dr. Sem Pringpuangkaew and Professor Dr. Udomsilpa Srisaengnam, and Dr. Visal Yawapongsiri, President of the College of Family Medicine inaugurated and addressed the opening. They also gave plenary lectures and chaired scientific session and symposia. Third Annual International Conference of TSBM on "Behavioural Medicine and Health Promotion" which will be held jointly with the First Asian Regional Conference of Behavioral Medicine and the Meeting of the ISBM Executive Committee and Governing Council at the Siam City Hotel in Bangkok between June 30 and July 4, 2003. The conference was organized by Thai Society of Behavioral Medicine (TSBM) in collaboration with ISBM, The College of Family Physicians of Thailand, The National Institute for Child and Family Development, and Neuro-Behavioural Biology Center, Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development, Mahidol University, Salaya, Nakornpathom, Thailand (for detail see http://neuroscience.mahidol.ac.th/3tsbm )
